Fantastic video of Al Lang Field in 1947

While perusing the YouTubes, I found this gem – a video on the opening of Al Lang Field in 1947. According to AlLangBaseball.com

“Al Lang Field opened in 1947 when a sell-out spring training crowd of 7,706 saw the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees and Stan Musial hit the first home run out of the park and on to Beach Drive”

There is so much baseball history in this video: Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio, Dom DiMaggio, Joe Garagiola, and two former commissioners (Happy Chandler and Ford Frick). Also making appearances are Grantland Rice, the man the Grantland website is named for, and of course, former St. Petersburg mayor Al Lang.

And how about that Ted Williams home run?
